What thirty minutes buys
A 30-minute rating at 1200°F is time enough for a fire that is caught early and fought quickly, in a house within easy reach of a fire station. The steel keeps the shape; the drywall lining does the cooling, because gypsum holds water in its crystals and a fire has to boil that off before the heat gets through. Two seals on the door close the gap against smoke.
If you live a long drive from the nearest engine, let that weigh in your choice. It is the question about any fire rating that only you can answer.
Delivery and Siting
At 388 lbs it ships by freight to the curb on a liftgate truck. The carrier will call ahead to arrange a delivery window, so someone will need to be home. The driver lowers it by liftgate to your curb or the end of your driveway. Freight drivers don't bring deliveries inside, up steps or into the garage.
Two people and a stair-climbing hand truck can bring it in on the level; for a full flight of stairs, a safe-moving company is the better plan, and we can help you find one. That service is priced separately.
What this is not
It is not a media safe. The fire rating protects paper. Hard drives, USB sticks, memory cards and film need an interior held below 125°F, and this safe makes no such claim.
It is not water rated. No claim is made. A house fire usually brings a great deal of water from the hoses, so keep papers in sealed bags inside if that matters to you.
It is not a UL burglary-rated safe. No burglary listing is claimed. Its protection is the steel, the boltwork on all four sides of the door, and its weight.
On the maker
American Security are based in Fontana, California, and make everything from home safes to high-security commercial units. The TF is their economical fire safe for the home, and this is the broader of its two sizes. If you need a figure we haven't listed, ask us and we'll put the question to American Security.
Questions
Will it fit through my door?
Yes. It is 24 inches wide, against 30 to 32 inches for a typical interior door.
Does it come in other colors?
No. American Security make it in textured black only.
Who tested the fire rating?
American Security's listing gives 30 minutes at 1200°F without naming a laboratory. Ask us and we'll find out.
Will it protect hard drives or USB sticks in a fire?
No. It is rated for paper. Digital media needs a safe rated to keep its interior below 125°F.
