What TL-30 means
TL-30 is a UL burglary listing, and a serious one. UL's testers attack the door and its front face for thirty minutes of working time with hand tools, power tools, grinding points and carbide drills. To pass, the safe must neither open nor give up a six-square-inch hole.
Behind the lock sits a hardplate, to turn a drill, and behind that a glass relock system: a glass plate that shatters if the lock is drilled or punched, releasing relockers that hold the bolts shut whatever happens to the lock. A separate relocker backs it up. The door is 6 inches thick including its boltwork, the body 2.75 inches, and the bolts move on three sides of the door.
Two hours, and what it is for
A fire rating buys time, and two hours is a long time: long enough for the fire that takes a while to reach and longer to put out, in a building some way from the nearest station or empty overnight. Hayman give the duration and do not publish the test temperature or the laboratory on this listing. Ask us and we'll find out.
Delivery & Siting
At 840 lbs it ships by freight and is delivered to the curb by a liftgate truck. The carrier will call ahead to arrange a delivery window. The driver lowers the safe at your curb or the end of your driveway; freight drivers don't bring deliveries inside, up steps or into garages. Bringing the safe inside is a separate service, which we can help you arrange after you order.
On a slab or a ground floor it needs no special thought. On an upper floor, place it near a bearing wall and across the joists, and have a builder look at the floor first.
What this is not
It is not a media safe. The fire rating protects paper. Hard drives, USB sticks, memory cards and film need an interior held below 125°F, and this safe makes no such claim.
It is not water rated. No claim is made. A house fire usually brings a great deal of water from the hoses, so keep papers in sealed bags inside if that matters to you.
It is not rated on all six sides. The TL-30 listing covers the door and its front face. A TL-30x6 rating extends the same attack to the sides, top and back, and this safe makes no such claim; there, the protection is the 2.75-inch body and where the safe stands.
On the maker
Hayman Safe Company is a family-owned manufacturer in Oviedo, Florida, and has been making safes there since 1971. Their range runs from home fire safes to commercial safes rated to TL-30, sold largely through locksmiths and specialist safe dealers. The MagnaVault TL30 sits at the top of that range. If you need a figure we haven't listed, ask us and we'll put the question to Hayman.
Questions
Which lock does it come with?
Hayman's listing doesn't name the lock. Ask us and we'll confirm what is fitted and what the alternatives are.
Who tested the fire rating?
Hayman give 120 minutes without naming a test temperature or a laboratory. Ask us and we'll find out.
Will it protect hard drives or USB sticks in a fire?
No. It is rated for paper. Digital media needs a safe rated to keep its interior below 125°F.
What does the warranty cover?
Hayman give a one-year parts and labor warranty. Ask us for the full terms before you order and we'll get them from Hayman.
