Nobody sets out to accumulate. It happens the way a house fills — a ring inherited, a watch that marked something, the deeds, the titles, the folder of papers it would take a year of your life to replace. Then one day you count it and find you have become the custodian of rather more than you ever meant to be.

This is one of the larger safes we carry, one to choose when a box is no longer the right shape for the problem. Four feet tall, one hundred and eighty pounds, seven one-inch live bolts turning into the frame, and three adjustable shelves inside rather than two. Bolted to the wall through the two holes already drilled in its back, it is not going anywhere at all.

A note on the number. This safe is sold as 11.5 cubic feet — that is its exterior, the space it occupies in your room. Most of this trade quotes the interior, and so do we: 7.14 cubic feet, 33.8 inches tall, 22.4 wide, 16.3 deep. That is the figure to measure your belongings against.

Specifications

• Seven 1" live locking bolts, solid steel body, anti-pry concealed hinges
• Reinforced door assembly — the "3 inches" quoted for this door is the whole assembly front to back: the steel face, the boltwork behind it and the backing plate. Not three inches of solid plate; nothing that size could weigh what this safe weighs.
• 180 lbs — beyond what two people move willingly, and it bolts to the wall through two pre-drilled holes (expansion bolts included)
• Touchscreen digital lock, 1–12 digit code — set four digits for speed or twelve for depth
• Two ways in: code alone, or master key plus code
• Emergency key and external battery backup, so a dead battery never locks you out of your own safe
• 60-second alarm after three wrong codes; the warning system stays armed afterward
• Interior: 33.8"H × 22.4"W × 16.3"D — 7.14 cubic feet of usable space
• Exterior: 47.5"H × 22.8"W × 19.6"D — the 11.5 cu ft this safe is sold under
• Three adjustable shelves, all fully removable
• Inner locking box — a separately keyed compartment, for the few things that want a second door between them and the world
• Leather-lined interior, LED light, one door basket, six door hooks
• Four removable wheels — for getting it into position, then off again for good
• One year of manufacturer service support

What this safe is not. It carries no fire rating, and we won't imply one. TIGERKING builds fire-rated models in a separate series; this is not one of them. It is built to defeat hands and tools, and it does that honestly. If fire is the loss you are actually guarding against — paper, or drives, or film — then a rated fire or media safe is the right instrument, and we will gladly tell you which one.

Why the larger one

The honest reason to buy the bigger safe is not that you have more to put in it today. It is that you will.

Almost nobody's collection shrinks. Papers arrive, a parent's things come to you, a small thing is bought to mark a large occasion, and the safe you chose for what you owned five years ago becomes a cupboard you have to think about before opening. A safe that is full is a safe that starts having things left on top of it.

Seven and a bit cubic feet, across three adjustable shelves, is room to keep documents flat, jewelry where you can see it, and a whole shelf still empty — which is the shelf that makes the thing useful in ten years rather than in one.

What the weight buys you

A safe is one of the few things you can judge by picking it up, which is to say by failing to.

Thin-walled safes exist in great number, and they are not all dishonest — they will stop a curious houseguest and a child, and sometimes that is the whole of the job. What they will not stop is someone who came prepared, because a light safe does not have to be opened at the scene. It can simply be taken somewhere quieter, and opened at leisure with better tools than they could carry.

At 180 pounds, this one is not leaving a room without equipment and a plan. The seven live bolts are an inch across and turn into the frame on the opening side. The hinges sit behind the door where a pry bar cannot find them. And once it is bolted through the back into a wall stud, weight stops being the question at all.

The inside, thought through

Most safes are a steel box with a shelf in it. This one has been considered a little further.

All three shelves adjust and lift out altogether, so the same cabinet holds flat documents on one level and something tall and awkward on the next. There is an inner locking box — a safe within the safe — for whatever you would rather not have visible even to someone standing at the open door. The walls are lined in soft leather, which sounds like a flourish until you have set a watch down on bare steel. An LED light comes on when you open it, because a safe is usually opened in a closet, and closets are dark.

On the back of the door: six hooks and a basket, for keys, chains, envelopes, the small things that otherwise slide to the bottom and stay there.

On the maker

We didn't design this safe; TIGERKING did, and we think they did it well.

We carry it because at this weight and price the specification is unusually straight — seven real bolts rather than four, hidden hinges, an alarm that means something, a battery backup that keeps a dead cell from becoming a locksmith's bill. Every purchase comes with a year of the manufacturer's service support, and if you would rather talk to us than to them, you can. We would prefer it.

A safe is bought once and lived with for twenty years. That is a long time to be quietly pleased, or quietly annoyed.

Questions

Is it difficult to install? No. Two holes are already drilled through the back, and two expansion bolts come in the box. Find a stud or a masonry wall, mark, drill, bolt. The wheels get it into the room; take them off before you anchor it. At 180 pounds, have someone with you.

Can it be opened with a key? Yes, and in more than one way. You can set it to open on the code alone, or to require the master key and the code, which is the stricter arrangement. An emergency key is included for the day the touchscreen fails or the batteries die — as is an external battery backup, so that day may never come.

Is it heavy enough that it can't simply be taken? 180 pounds is past the point where this is carried anywhere. It is a two-person lift with a plan, and a bad one at that. Bolted to a wall, the question stops being about weight at all.

Can the shelves come out? All three, and they adjust in between. Jewelry and documents want one arrangement; a camera, a laptop, a folio, a bottle wants another. The cabinet doesn't decide for you.

How long can the code be? Anywhere from one digit to twelve. Four is quick and works. Eight is what we would suggest if the safe holds anything you would hate to explain. The touchscreen doesn't slow down for a longer code.

How does it compare to your smaller safe? This one has roughly two-thirds more usable space inside — 7.14 cubic feet against 4.33 — one more locking bolt, one more shelf, and forty-eight more pounds of resistance. If you are choosing between them, choose on what you expect to own in ten years, not what is on the table today.
