Two hours, and how
ETL tested it for two hours in a furnace at 1200°F, and the inside stayed below 350°F throughout. Paper begins to char at a little over 400°F, so that margin is the whole point.
The walls are two steel skins, 11-gauge outside and 12-gauge in, with DryLight poured between them: American Security's seamless concrete-based fill. Concrete keeps water bound into its structure and releases it slowly as steam, which is what holds the temperature down. At the door a Palusol seal swells shut in the heat and a silicone seal keeps out the smoke.
Delivery and Siting
At an impressive 1,081 lbs without packaging, its weight exceeds the ability of the freight company to lower it off the truck. So unless you have the means of unloading this safe from the truck yourself, it will arrive at an R&L Freight terminal nearest to where you live. Getting it from there to your home requires a safe-moving company with the equipment for the job to move it inside. We'll help you find one near you and price the job if you wish.
At 30 inches wide it will not pass a typical interior door face-on. Turned sideways its 26-inch depth has to clear instead, so measure the narrowest opening on the route against that, and allow for the handle.
A ground floor on a concrete slab is the natural home for a safe this heavy. On an upper floor, ask a contractor to check the floor before it goes in. The power strip needs a wall socket within reach.
What this is not
It is not a media safe. The fire rating protects paper. Hard drives, USB sticks, memory cards and film need an interior held below 125°F, and this safe makes no such claim.
It is not water rated. No claim is made. A house fire usually brings a great deal of water from the hoses, so keep papers in sealed bags inside if that matters to you.
It is not a commercial burglary safe. UL RSC is a real, independent rating, but it is the residential one, a step below the TL ratings used by jewelers and businesses.
On the maker
American Security are based in Fontana, California, and make everything from home safes to high-security commercial units. The BFX is built in the USA and carries two independent ratings: two hours at 1200°F from ETL, and UL RSC against burglary. If you need a figure we haven't listed, ask us and we'll put the question to American Security.
Questions
Can I choose the color?
American Security offer the BFX in a long list of high-gloss and textured colors, two-tone. There are also three hardware finishes: chrome, brass and black nickel. Tell us which you want and we will confirm what is available for this listing.
Some special finishes - such as gloss finishes can take many weeks to fulfill. Please contact us, and we will give you the lead time.
Does it come with an electronic lock?
A key-locking mechanical dial is standard. The ESL10 electronic lock is an option; ask us before you order if you want one.
What does 120 minutes at 1200°F actually mean?
ETL held it in a furnace at 1200°F for two hours, and the inside stayed below 350°F, cool enough for paper.
Will it protect hard drives or USB sticks in a fire?
No. It is rated for paper. Digital media needs a safe rated to keep its interior below 125°F.
