How the fire rating is earned
ETL, an independent laboratory, held it at 1200°F for two hours, and the inside stayed below 350°F, short of the little-over-400°F where paper begins to char.
The fill is DryLight, a poured concrete-based composite between an 11-gauge outer skin and a 12-gauge inner one. Concrete holds water bound into its structure and gives it up as steam in a fire, which is what keeps the inside cool for so long. The door closes on a Palusol seal that swells in heat, and a silicone seal against smoke.
Delivery and Siting
At an impressive 1,851 lbs this safe travels by freight, its weight exceeds the ability of the freight company to lower it off the truck.
Unless you have a means of lowering it from the truck yourself, It will arrive at an R&L Freight terminal nearest to where you live.
From there we will see to bringing it to your home and siting it in a location on the ground floor. Anything else would likely be an extra charge.
A ground floor on a concrete slab is the natural home for a safe this heavy. On an upper floor, ask a contractor to check the floor before it goes in. The power strip needs a wall socket within reach.
What this is not
It is not a media safe. The fire rating protects paper. Hard drives, USB sticks, memory cards and film need an interior held below 125°F, and this safe makes no such claim.
It is not water rated. No claim is made. A house fire usually brings a great deal of water from the hoses, so keep papers in sealed bags inside if that matters to you.
It is not a commercial burglary safe. UL RSC is a real, independent rating, but it is the residential one, a step below the TL ratings used by jewelers and businesses.
On the maker
American Security are based in Fontana, California, and make everything from home safes to high-security commercial units. If you need a figure we haven't listed, ask us and we'll put the question to American Security.

Does it come with an electronic lock?
A key-locking mechanical dial is standard. The ESL10 electronic lock is an option; ask us before you order if you want one.
What does 120 minutes at 1200°F actually mean?
ETL held it in a furnace at 1200°F for two hours, and the inside stayed below 350°F, cool enough for paper.
Will it protect hard drives or USB sticks in a fire?
No. It is rated for paper. Digital media needs a safe rated to keep its interior below 125°F.
