A jewelry safe the size of a bedside cabinet: 20 inches each way, finished in white, with two lined drawers, a necklace hanger on the door, a mirrored back and a light that comes on when it senses movement. The fire rating is 45 minutes at 1200°F, certified by ETL.

Underneath the quilted faux leather it is a 12-gauge steel safe with a quarter-inch steel door plate and four 1.25-inch bolts on three sides. It is small enough to sit inside a wardrobe and heavy enough, at 170 lbs, that it stays where it is put.

Room for rings and earrings in the lined drawers, a necklace hanging straight on the door, and the evening bag you would hate to replace in the space beneath.

The inside, thought through

The two drawers are shallow and lined, with pillows for watches and slots for rings, so pieces lie flat instead of in a heap. The necklace hanger on the door keeps chains from tangling, and the mirror means you can try something on without taking it to another room.

Below the drawers there is open space for larger pieces in their boxes, or a bag.

Delivery and Siting

At 170 lbs it travels by freight and is delivered to the curb by a liftgate truck. The carrier will call ahead to arrange a delivery window, so someone will need to be home. The driver lowers it by liftgate to your curb or end of driveway. Freight drivers don't bring deliveries inside, up steps or into the garage.

Two people and a dolly will be required to bring it inside and position it. At 20 inches wide it fits through any doorway, and inside a closet or wardrobe if the floor will take it.

What this is not

It is not a media safe. The rating protects paper. Hard drives, USB sticks, discs and film need an interior kept below 125°F, and this safe makes no such claim.

It is not water rated. No claim is made. A house fire usually brings a great deal of water from the hoses, so keep papers in sealed bags inside if that matters to you.

It is not a UL burglary-rated safe. No burglary listing is claimed. Steel, three-way boltwork and a hard plate over the lock make it slow work for a thief, but it is a home safe, not a jeweler's safe.

American Security (AMSEC) make safes in Fontana, California, from small home units through to high-security commercial safes. Will it fit in a closet?

Very likely. It's 20 inches each way; allow about 22 inches of depth with the handle and room for the door to open.

Does it need bolting down?

We'd recommend it. There are four anchor holes and the hardware is included.

Is the fire rating independent?

Yes. It is ETL certified to 1200°F for 45 minutes.

Will it protect hard drives or USB sticks in a fire?

No. It's rated for paper. Digital media needs a safe rated to keep its interior below 125°F.

How is it delivered?

By freight, to the curb, on a liftgate truck. 

Can I raise it off the floor?

Yes. American Security make a pedestal for it, sold separately. It has to be anchored too.
